What to Bring

Often called the jewel of Central America, Costa Rica is a democratic republic noted for its political stability, relatively high standard of living, beautiful geography and climate, and friendly population. Costa Rica's economy, long based on agriculture, is augmented by a significant tourism sector along with electronics manufacturing. Travel to and within Costa Rica is regarded as relatively easy and safe. Costa Ricans have a high regard for their beautiful country, and it is dotted with national parks and preserves where the immense variety of native flora and fauna can be readily explored. Medical centers, financial services, and communications and transportation infrastructures make for a pleasant visit to Costa Rica.

Quick Notes:

  • Currency: Colones, with the US Dollar (and many major credit cards) readily accepted.
  • Health: No special immunizations are required or advised. The water is suitable for drinking in the populated areas.
  • Passports and Visas: Check the current regulations - as of now citizens of many countries (including the US) can stay for a period of 90 days without requiring a visa. Citizens of several other countries may similarly stay for up to 30 days without a visa. If required, visas may be obtained for about US$ 20.00.
  • Roads and Driving: Rental cars, often 4X4's, are available. The roadways are not always well maintained, and potholes and ruts may be common, especially in the "Wet Season" of May through October. Driving after dark on unfamiliar roads should probably be avoided.
  • Public Transportation: Inter-city bus service and scheduled airline service within Costa Rica is generally available, and charters services and special tours abound.
